Chicago Train Accident Injures 140

August 6, 2001

A train collision in downtown Chicago during Friday morning rush hour injured more than 140 people. The elevated trains collided about 9 a.m., leaving hundreds of passengers stranded for hours. Service on other trains traveling along the same track was also interrupted.

In the middle of Friday's rush hour, one train stopped and a following train struck it from behind. Some passengers climbed down ladders provided by rescuers. The trains were then moved to a nearby station where the remaining passengers were unloaded.

A Chicago Fire Department spokesman said that at least 140 passengers were injured, although none of the injuries appeared life threatening. Broken bones were the most serious injuries noted at the scene.

Chicago Transit Authority officials are investigating the crash. It is unclear why the accident occurred, as both train operators were been able to see each other, according to investigators. The operators agreed to take alcohol tests immediately following the accident.
