Dozens Injured on "Superman" Roller Coaster

August 8, 2001

Dozens of people were injured yesterday as two cars on the "Superman Ride of Steel" roller coaster collided. While most injuries appeared minor, at least twenty-two patrons were sent to hospitals in the Agawam, Massachusetts area. Doctors reported injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to broken bones and whiplash.

The Six Flags New England ride remained closed while investigators searched for the cause of the accident. Witnesses say that one car was leaving the station as a second car slammed into the rear of the first. The ride, which is capable of speeds up to 80 miles per hour, opened in May 2000.
