Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal recently sent a scathing letter to Purdue Pharma, the maker of the prescription painkiller OxyContin. The letter demands that the company take more action to reduce the number of overdose deaths attributed to the potent drug, including changing Purdue's marketing and distribution plan.
Blumenthal suggested that Purdue donate some of its profits from the drug to assist those addicted to OxyContin.
After the letter was released to the public, Purdue issued a statement that wholly disagreed with the Attorney General's position. However, company officials plan to meet with Blumenthal in the coming weeks to discuss his proposal.
OxyContin is a slow-release painkiller designed to ease the chronic pain suffered by cancer patients and those with arthritis. Those who abuse OxyContin often crush the drug in order to snort or inject it. Taken in this manner, the drug produces a potentially deadly heroin-like high.
