A Florida State University computer programmer is the first Florida resident to sue Bayer Pharmaceutical claiming that the company's cholesterol-lowering drug Baycol caused a variety of adverse effects including muscular degeneration, chronic fatigue, liver problems, chronic back pain and depression. The company voluntarily recalled Baycol earlier this month after reports that the drug killed at least 52 people.
Over 700,000 Americans took Baycol, also known as cerivastatin. In severe cases, the drug can cause rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which muscle cells deteriorate and are released into the blood stream, leading to kidney failure and possibly death.
Bayer representatives would not comment on the current lawsuit. While it is the first suit filed in Florida, several other claims have been filed in other states.
Food and Drug Administration officials are unsure how many rhabdomyolysis attacks have been caused by Baycol and how many Baycol users have survived a bout with the disease.
