Clark County, Nevada health authorities informed patrons staying at a popular Las Vegas timeshare resort that several guests were recently diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease. The three adults have all recovered from the disease. Water samples taken from the Polo Tower timeshare tested positive for the bacterium that causes the respiratory illness. Officials claim to have distributed information to all residents staying at the timeshare.
The fliers told residents that officials are unsure whether the three former guests contracted the disease while staying at Polo Tower. However, they urged guests with medical conditions that make them susceptible to Legionnaires to consider staying at another resort. If guests choose to continue their stay, the fliers ask them not to use water from the faucets, showers and whirlpools. The guests staying in areas where the legionella bacteria were found are now staying elsewhere.
Legionella bacteria live in water and outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease sometime occur when the bacteria spread through air conditioning systems in large buildings. Legionnaires' disease can produce flu like symptoms and is fatal in 15% to 20% of the cases.
