German Regulators Blast Baycol

August 17, 2001

Bayer, the maker of Baycol, has received numerous complaints from the German government, citing the company for failing to warn German citizens of the risks associated with the Baycol. In Germany, as well as many other countries outside of the United States, Baycol is sold as "Lipobay."

Deputy Health Minister Klaus Theo Schroeder commented that Bayer has been aware of new findings regarding dangerous side effects associated with Baycol since June, yet the company failed to communicate these findings to German authorities. According to German law, Bayer should have notified the government within two weeks of such findings.

Bayer responded to the complaints by stating that the company "has always acted in the interests of patients," and "all substantial information" had been given to German regulators in April.

In Germany alone, seven deaths have been linked to Baycol/Lipobay. In addition, over 200 German patients have reported serious side effects, including 91 cases of muscle damage.
