Bayer AG, Germany's largest drugmaker, is under intense scrutiny from public prosecutors in Turin, Italy. Bayer's anti-cholesterol drug Baycol, known in many European countries as Lipobay, was removed from the market earlier this month because of serious side effects.
Italian prosecutors want to learn more about Bayer's knowledge of Baycol's side effects. To date, twenty-five Italians have developed muscular problems after using Baycol, and at least 52 deaths worldwide have been linked to the drug.
In the United States, several lawsuits have been filed accusing Bayer of misleading consumers about the risks associated with Baycol. The drug has now been removed from every international market.
