Some Asthma Drugs Cause Bone Loss

In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers have determined that the use of inhaled steroids in the treatment of asthma may increase bone deterioration in women. Researchers say that bone loss associated with inhaled steroids is most pronounced in the hip area.
The study measured the bone density of over 100 women who suffer from asthma and use inhaled steroids to control the condition. "We found a direct relation between a higher dose of glucocorticoids (steroids) and small yearly decreases in the bone density of the total hip." said authors of the study.
While inhaled steroids are among the most effective asthma medications, the study's authors urge doctors to prescribe the lowest dose possible. In addition, women using inhaled steroids should monitor their bone density, partake in bone strengthening exercises, and eat a healthy diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D.
