Rail Attraction Injures Several Passengers

April 30, 2001

Two cars of the Angels Flight railway, the historic downtown Los Angeles attraction, malfunctioned today injuring several passengers. The accident occurred near the bottom of the incline when the two wooden cars collided. The cars normally travel in opposite directions and only pass at the center of the incline where the tracks are wide enough to allow both cars through. Officials with the railway say that the cause of the accident is unclear.

The railway was first operated in 1901; by the 1950s the area had deteriorated and in 1969 the railway was shuttered. History buffs refurbished the system in the 1990s, and the railroad reopened for passengers in 1996.
