The families of five Columbine shooting victims have filed a lawsuit against Solvay Pharmaceuticals Inc., claiming that the company's drug Luvox influenced shooter Eric Harris' decision to attack the school in April 1999. The lawsuit alleges that Solvay failed to properly inform Harris' doctor that Luvox may impair judgment and thinking processes.
Luvox is used to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Luvox was found in Harris' system during an autopsy performed by the Jefferson County coroner. The plaintiffs are each asking for more than $75,000 from Solvay. However, Solvay defends the safety of Luvox with a 1999 study published by the American Psychiatric Association which found no connection between antidepressants and violence.
