Tragedy struck New York City once again yesterday morning when an American Airlines A300 Airbus, en route to the Dominican Republic, crashed into the Rockaway Beach area leaving an estimated 265 dead and several others missing. The crash comes as the city is trying to recover from the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the accident but early reports hint at a "catastrophic engine event." Eyewitnesses reported seeing pieces of the engine fall from the plane shortly before the jet slammed into Queens.
Accidents are not new to the A300 Airbus model, which was first put into service in 1974. Six A300s have crashed in its relatively short history. In addition, several aborted takeoffs and emergency landings have been recorded. This is the first A300 accident, though, where an engine reportedly fell from the airliner.
