Johns Hopkins University announced today that a scientist employed by the university violated the school's research guidelines and would be banned from further medical studies involving human subjects. In a report released by the university, investigators said the researcher, who was testing a cancer drug in India, conducted her experiments without the school's knowledge or permission.
Ru Chih Huang, a biologist, failed to obtain permission from the school as well as the Food and Drug Administration. The test involved the experimental cancer drug tetramethyl NDGA. The Indian Medical Association says 8 of the 25 volunteers have been identified. None are showing adverse effects. Huang told the Washington Post that she thought she had followed appropriate guidelines and disagreed with the university's punishment.
Hopkins made headlines in recent months after a medical research volunteer died in an asthma study. Since then, Federal regulators have kept a close eye on the university's 2,800 clinical trials.
