Oklahoma State University's men's basketball team suffered a great loss last January when eight people associated with the team, including two players, died in a plane crash while returning home from a game against the University of Colorado. Now the families of four of those killed as well as the family of the co-pilot have filed wrongful death lawsuits against the plane's owner, North Bay Charter of Reno, Nevada.
The National Transportation Safety Board blamed the January 27, 2001 accident on a loss of power. Attorneys for the plaintiffs will argue that the 26-year-old plane had a history of electrical problems and that the pilot, Denver Mills, should have been able to land the plane safely regardless of the electrical failure.
The lawsuits are the families' last chance for justice after settlement negotiations failed with the aircraft's insurer, the United States Aviation Insurance Group.
