The parents of a University of Indiana freshman who died last February from head injuries sustained at a Theta Chi fraternity party filed suit last week against the fraternity and a Bloomington hospital. Seth Korona, 19, struck his head when he fell backwards while doing a handstand over a beer keg. The maneuver is known as a "keg stand." The freshman made it back to his dormitory the same night, unaware of the severity of his head injury. The next morning Korona could not be revived.
Doctors mistakenly diagnosed Korona with meningitis, failing to see that his "neurological function was steadily decreasing," according to the family's attorney. It wasn't until days later that medical personnel scanned his head and discovered he had fractured his skull. Korona later suffered a seizure and a stroke. He died after emergency brain surgery.
Korona's parents have also named the fraternity's international chapter and its real estate corporation in the lawsuit.
