Florida Nursing Home Administrator Arrested

The owner of an Englewood, Florida nursing home was arrested and her assisted living facility was cited with 27 license violations after a patient died from a broken hip. Donald Holden, 89, refused to go back to his room when a night watchman confronted him in the early hours of December 10, 2000. While trying to punch the watchman, Holden slipped on the floor and broke his hip. After Holden refused assistance, Lynda Cox, the facility's administrator, decided to leave him on the floor. Five hours passed before orderlies helped him to bed. Four days later Holden was dead, succumbing to complications from surgery to repair his injured hip.
Cox was arrested for felony elderly neglect. In a January 27, 2001 letter from the Agency for Health Care Administration, Cox's facility was cited for deficiencies ranging from record keeping problems to unacceptable medical standards. Staff inefficiencies were also noted.
