Five of the largest tobacco companies in the industry have appealed a record $145 billion verdict that was reached in July 2000, calling the decision "bankrupting and excessive." The defendants in the class-action lawsuit, Philip Morris, R. J. Reynolds, Brown and Williamson, Lorillard and the Liggett Group, say the Miami-Dade Circuit Court trial, which took over two years to argue, was filled with legal errors. In addition, the companies claim the plaintiff's attorney used "inflammatory rhetoric."
