A New York plumber who suffered a fractured femur and torn meniscus when he fell through a hole in the roof of a Human Investment Project (HIP) home settled with the real estate firm and construction company responsible for the renovation project for over $2 million earlier this year. The 39-year-old-plumber fell through a hole covered with styrofoam insulation in 1997.
The plaintiff claimed Foxcourt Realty and Dutchess Building Renovators were liable because the styrofoam insulation covering the hole was inadequate. He also alleged that protective steel doors were not in place at the time of his fall. The defendants argued that the plumber's injuries were not as severe as he claimed.
