Baxter International has settled pending lawsuits with the families of ten Spanish patients who died last summer after being treated with defective Baxter dialyzers. The device, which filters waste from blood before it is returned to the body, was recalled in October after Baxter acknowledged that a fluid used in the manufacturing process may have contributed to over 51 deaths worldwide. As part of the settlement, the victims' families will receive $289,000 each.
Baxter filters may also be responsible for several deaths in Taiwan, Colombia, Italy, Germany, Croatia, Texas, and Nebraska.
