Several Cooper Tire models are facing public scrutiny for their possible role in dozens of fatal automobile accidents. According to reports, Cooper tires may develop shoulder area cracks which can cause tread separation leading to a sudden deflation of the tire. Similar to what caused the Firestone tire scandal, this defect may lead to serious injury or death if an accident ensues. To date, Cooper tires have been linked to 35 fatalities on U.S. highways. The billion-dollar tire maker is facing numerous lawsuits as a result.

During an Arkansas negligence lawsuit in the summer of 2000, several former Cooper Tire and Rubber Company employees alleged careless manufacturing procedures existed at the company's Texarkana and Tupelo, Mississippi plants. According to testimony, cans, plastic and chicken bones were often baked into the tires.
