Safety organizations are alerting people about dangerous gas pump fires caused by static electricity. According to reports, people who get back in their vehicle while the gas is pumping increase their chances of starting a fire at the pump when they go to take the nozzle out because of the added static electricity. Vapors from the gas connect with the static charges starting a fire. Interest groups warn that talking on a cell phone while pumping gas may contribute to static charges. Most documented cases involve people wearing rubber-soled shoes.
