Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurant Hepatitis Outbreak

Three people have died and more than 600 others are ill due to a hepatitis A outbreak at a Mexican restaurant near Pittsburgh. Over 14,500 patrons of Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurant in Beaver County may have been exposed to the virus from September 1 to November 3, when officials closed the restaurant. Local health clinics have seen an influx of people asking for the hepatitis A vaccine, an immune globulin shot. According to reports, medical personnel have vaccinated nearly 9,000 Beaver County residents since early November.

Although officials are still unable to pinpoint the source of the outbreak, they are focusing on green onions imported from Mexico. Authorities have begun detaining shipments of green onions at the border.

Investigators warn that many infected may not show symptoms of hepatitis A until Thanksgiving or Christmas, increasing fears that hundreds more may have the disorder. The restaurant will stay closed until at least January. At least two law firms have filed lawsuits against Chi-Chi's over the outbreak.

The hepatitis A virus may be transferred from the stool of one person to the mouth of another. The virus usually enters the body through sewage contaminated water and food, especially raw shellfish. Hepatitis A is characterized by mild "flu-like" symptoms, jaundice, severe stomach pains and diarrhea.
