Vermeer Round Hay Baler
The Vermeer round hay baler may pose a serious risk to agricultural workers because of its tendency to malfunction. The baler is designed to pack and tie field-dried hay into bundles for handling, storage, and shipping. Usually the hay has been raked into rows where it is then packed into rectangular bales and picked up by a truck for transport.
According to reports, dozens of farmers have been injured by the Vermeer baler because of twine clogging and irregular feeding. When the baler becomes jammed, the operator must physically remove the twine from the baler. Attempting to remove the clogged twine, many workers have had limbs caught in the pinch rollers of the baler while they were in operation. The results can be horrific. Several lawsuits filed against Vermeer allege the company knew farmers would eventually have to put their hands near the baler's pinch rollers to remove clogged hay but failed to properly warn users of the potential dangers.
