Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is a rare yet serious blood disorder characterized by the formation of small blood clots throughout the body. A sharp decrease in the number of platelets and red blood cells subsequently occurs leading to organ damage. Doctors have yet to discover a cause of the disorder.

Symptoms of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura include, but may not be limited to, kidney damage, abnormal heart rhythms, jaundice, neurological problems and blood in the urine. If left untreated, the disorder can be fatal.

Physicians often treat thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura through blood transfusions or the use of corticosteroids and aspirin.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura has been linked to E. coli exposure.
