Scaffolding Accidents
Scaffolds are temporary platforms, either supported from below or suspended from above, that allow workers to perform tasks at heights above ground level. Scaffolding accidents account for about 2 percent of the 500,000 construction-related injuries that occur every year.
The majority of reported accidents occur because of defective scaffolding equipment. Improper maintenance and construction is often cited. Planking may give way or objects may fall off the scaffold and strike a worker below. Laborers working on scaffolds outside high rises or other tall structures face the greatest danger. Plank slippage can lead to life-threatening injuries or death for these workers.
