White Finger Syndrome

Industrial workers are at risk of developing a muscle disorder associated with the use of vibrating power tools known as white finger syndrome. Also known as hand arm vibration syndrome, the disorder is caused by hand-transmitted vibration that leads to numbness, discomfort, tingling and lack of sensitivity of the fingers, especially when exposed to the cold. Excessive exposure to transmitted vibration may also cause discomfort in the wrists and muscles of the forearm. Whiteness in the tips of the fingers may result due to a restriction of blood flow.

Physicians suggest that industrial workers keep their hands and body warm if they develop white finger syndrome. Proper blood flow must be maintained to avoid discomfort and other symptoms of the disorder. Health officials recommend workers diagnosed with white finger syndrome avoid the use of certain industrial tools, including chain saws, pneumatic drills and hammers and grinders.
