Perfix Hernia Plug

A hernia is a condition in which part of the intestine bulges through a weak area in muscles in the abdomen. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin (the area between the abdomen and thigh). It is called "inguinal" because the intestines push through a weak spot in the inguinal canal, which is a triangle-shaped opening between layers of abdominal muscle near the groin. Obesity, pregnancy, heavy lifting, and straining to pass stool can cause the intestine to push against the inguinal canal.

Although there are a number of techniques used by surgeons to repair a hernia, physicians often favor a mesh plug to prevent a hernia from reoccurring in the same location. Introduced in 1993, the Perfix Plug is under scrutiny because of reports linking the device to post-operative complications. The plug reportedly may shrink, detach and travel to other parts of the body where it can damage organs and nerves. Patients have complained of severe, debilitating pain after the plug hardened and damaged nerves in the genital region.
