Diesel Exhaust Exposure
Diesel exhaust can exacerbate allergies, impact the lungs' ability to function, worsen asthma, and may cause cancer. Diesel fumes are especially dangerous to children as their defense system is not as developed as adults.
Diesel exhaust contains toxic gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, benzene and others. The fumes also contain "soot," small particulates known to be carcinogenic when inhaled.
Over one million workers are exposed to diesel exhaust. Occupational exposure is increasing with the expanding use of diesel equipment. Occupational hazards are highest for railroad workers, miners, bridge and tunnel workers, stevedores, farm workers, truck drivers, material handling machine operators, automobile maintenance garage workers, and loading dock workers.
An October 2003 study released by the California Air Resources Board reveals that toxic diesel exhaust from older yellow school buses may be exposing kids to pollution levels five times greater than kids riding on newer ones.
