Playground Accidents: Overview
Over 200,000 children are injured yearly in playground accidents throughout the United States. Approximately 35% of these injuries are serious (fractures, concussions, internal injuries, dislocations, crushes and amputations). Tragically, approximately twenty children die each year from playground-related injuries. More than half of these deaths result from strangulation, while 30% are caused by falls. Children typically fall off of monkey bars, swings, climbers and slides. Surprisingly, children are more likely to be seriously injured on playground equipment than they are in bicycle or car accidents.
About 70% of all playground injuries occur on public property.
