N-hexane Exposure
A chemical solvent found in several car maintenance products has been linked to nerve damage according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Repeated exposure to the solvent, n-hexane, may cause numbness in the hands, feet, and forearms. In severe cases exposure may lead to a loss of motor skills. N-hexane is a colorless, volatile liquid with a mild, gasoline-like odor.
A study by California health officials found that several mechanics reported symptoms related to n-hexane exposure after using products that contained the solvent. The CDC subsequently issued a warning to mechanics about the dangers of continual exposure to the solvent.
Exposure to n-hexane can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or eye and skin contact. Acute exposure may result in dizziness, confusion, nausea, headache, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin.
Health officials warn that n-hexane is found in many products, including glues, spray paints, motor fuel, and silicones. In addition to the automotive repair industry, printing facilities and furniture factories in Europe, Asia, and the United States have also reported n-hexane exposure cases.
