Intussusception: Overview

Intussusception is most common in small children between the age of two months and six years, with young boys being most susceptible. Intussusception is an obstruction of the intestine that results when the intestine folds in upon itself. The condition blocks the intestine causing the natural flow of digestive materials to back up behind the blockage. Symptoms in children include crying, pale complexion, and sweating. Additionally, children tend to bring their legs to their chest in an attempt to relieve the pain. Intussusception may require immediate medical attention as the condition may eventually lead to a perforated intestine, gangrene and death.
