Ischemic Colitis: Overview
Disruption of the blood flow to the colon may cause ischemic colitis. This condition is potentially life threatening as gangrene may set in as a result of the decreased blood supply to the colon. Some of the symptoms include fever, blood in the stool, diarrhea, nausea, low back pain, and abdominal pain. Among others, ischemic colitis may be caused by stroke (which results in a reduced blood flow to the colon) or the recently recalled irritable bowel syndrome drug Lotronex.
