
The esophagus is a long narrow tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Muscles move food through the esophagus into the stomach. A ruptured esophagus is a serious and life threatening condition that may be caused by vomiting or the insertion of medical devices. A ruptured esophagus may lead to a condition known as a pleural effusion in which fluid collects around the lungs.
