Autoimmune Disorders: Overview
An autoimmune reaction occurs when the body mistakes its own tissue for foreign tissue. Certain substances prompt the immune system to produce antibodies that attack the otherwise normal tissue in an attempt to destroy it.
Autoimmune reactions can range from the mildly annoying to life threatening. For instance, the body is capable of attacking all of its organs including the kidneys, lungs, heart, and brain. Conditions such as Lupus, Graves' disease, and rheumatoid arthritis are well known autoimmune diseases.
