The bladder is the holding tank for urine. The urinary sphincter, located at the bottom of the bladder, is the muscle that controls the release of urine from the bladder. When the bladder nears capacity, nerves tell the brain that it is time to use the restroom. Sufferers of a neurogenic bladder cannot control their urinary habits because the nerves that transmit urinary messages to the brain have been damaged by a brain or spinal cord injury. This lack of bladder control is called urinary incontinence.
