Lactic Acidosis: Overview

Acidosis occurs when there is an excessive amount of acid buildup within the body. Lactic acidosis is a condition in which the body has an abnormally high amount of lactic acid. Typically, a person with lactic acidosis breathes heavier and faster as the body tries to reduce excessive lactic acid buildup by decreasing carbon dioxide levels in the body. The kidneys may also excrete more acid into the urine. A severe case of acidosis can lead to coma.
