Constipation may be defined as difficulty in achieving, or infrequent occurrence of, bowel movements. While normal bowel movements vary greatly from one person to the next, when a person's movement is painful or impossible, we say that the person is constipated.
Occasionally constipation is so severe that a sufferer's bowel ruptures, requiring surgery and possibly resulting in death. Constipation has many causes including diet, lack of physical activity, dehydration and the ingestion of certain medicines.
