A cataract is cloudiness in the lens of the eye. Cataracts cause loss of vision over an extended period of time. The exact cause of cataracts is unknown. However, cataracts may occur after exposure to X-rays, excessive sunlight, certain drugs, trauma, and as the result of some diseases.
Generally, cataracts affect older people. In fact, about 50% of the population has a cataract by age 65. In rare cases, infants can have congenital cataracts, which usually stem from the mother having German measles, chickenpox, or other infectious diseases during pregnancy.
Cataract surgery may successfully alleviate the condition through removal of the defective lens and the implantation of an artificial lens.
