Common Cold: Overview

The common cold can be caused by a variety of viruses depending on the season. Some viruses are more prevalent in certain seasons than others. For instance, the influenza virus typically only causes a cold in the winter while a summer cold is more likely to be caused by a rhinovirus. Cold symptoms tend to last one to two weeks, and since they are viral rather than bacterial infections, antibiotics are not recommended. Studies show that smokers are more susceptible to the common cold than non-smokers.
