Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi in the lungs. Infectious bronchitis usually occurs in the winter due to a viral or bacterial infection. Smokers and others who have chronic lung or airway diseases are especially susceptible to bronchitis.
Specific types of dust, fumes from strong acids, ammonia, chlorine, sulfur dioxide and bromine, tobacco and other smoke, may cause irritative bronchitis.
People suffering from the first stages of silicosis, an occupational lung disease caused by inhaling silica (quartz) dust, may suffer from bronchitis.
