Lymphoma

Lymphomas are cancers affecting lymphocytes (white blood cells), causing them to produce rapidly and uncontrollably, thus forming tumors throughout the body. The infection-fighting lymph system produces cells which combat infection throughout the body. As lymphomas progress, the body experiences increasing difficulty fighting infection.

The most well known lymphomas are Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an investigation into certain arthritis medications known as TNF inhibitors, such as the popular Enbrel and Remicade drugs. The FDA is concerned that there may be a link between TNF inhibitors and Lymphoma. To date, any connection remains unconfirmed.

A study published in the January 2004 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology has found a link between long-term use of dark hair-dye and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. According to the study, which examined 1,300 Connecticut women who began coloring their hair before 1980, dark hair-dye increased their chance of developing the form of cancer by 40 percent. The risk reportedly doubled among women who used permanent hair-dye.
