Common Cold Drugs: Overview

The common cold can be caused by a variety of viruses. Some viruses are more prevalent in certain seasons than others. For instance, the influenza virus typically only causes a cold in the winter, while a summer cold is more likely to be caused by a rhinovirus.

Cold symptoms tend to last one to two weeks, and since they are viral rather than bacterial infections, antibiotics are not recommended. In the absence of a "cure for the common cold," many remedies have been developed to help sufferers endure the associated symptoms. The usefulness of these over-the-counter and prescription drugs has been debated. Many of these drugs have significant side effects including occasionally severe drowsiness and stroke.
