Heartburn & Acid Reflux Drugs: Overview

Acid reflux or "heartburn" occurs when acid escapes from the stomach and moves up and into the esophagus. The esophagus is not designed to withstand stomach acid.

Acid reflux is called heartburn because the acid irritates the fragile lining of the esophagus causing pain in the chest, neck and throat. The condition is typically nothing more than an annoyance, yet chronic and severe cases may cause ulcers in the esophagus and increase the risk of developing cancer. Several over-the-counter and prescription medications are available to help alleviate the condition.
