Irritable Bowel Syndrome Drugs: Overview

Irritable Bowel Syndrome can result in excess gas build-up, problems achieving bowel movement (constipation), loose stool (diarrhea), and / or bloating. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, sometimes mistakenly called colitis, mucous colitis, spastic colon, spastic bowel, or functional bowel disease is usually mild, however it can occasionally be incapacitating.

Currently there is no known cause, however investigators suspect that emotional stress and diet play important roles with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Additionally, there is no known cure or treatment for the disorder. Until recently, the drug Lotronex was used to combat Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Lotronex was removed from the market in November 2000 after dozens of patients experienced severe complications while taking the drug.
