Anesthetics: Overview

Anesthesia, local, regional, and general, is used to reduce or eliminate a patient's ability to perceive pain. Anesthetic drugs can have powerful affects on both the physical and emotional state of the patient. Local anesthetics numb the area affected by a surgical procedure while general anesthetics cause a loss of consciousness or put patients "to sleep." While anesthetics allow otherwise inoperable (without their use the pain would be overwhelming) procedures to be performed, their use is not without risks. A patient rendered unconscious by a general anesthetic must be monitored closely to ensure that vital bodily functions continue to operate properly.
