Baby Cribs, Car Seats & Carriers
Cribs, car seats and baby carriers can be hazardous to your child's health if they are poorly designed or used improperly. Statistics show that over 12,000 babies are injured and 50 die each year in crib accidents alone. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulates cribs, car seats and baby carriers; however, some dangerous products still remain on the market. In 1999 the CPSC recalled or ordered corrective actions to be taken on 2 brands of cribs and 5 baby carriers. The 2 cribs were voluntarily recalled because of improper crib construction and slat spacing. A total of 16,500 units distributed were recalled.
The CPSC is also concerned about the safety of so-called "baby bath seats." These products are seats that attach to the bottom of a bathtub through the use of suction cups. The CPSC reports that over the last 20 years nearly 80 babies have died while using baby bath seats. Accidents with these seats tend to occur when the suction cups fail, allowing the seat to overturn, thereby submerging the child. The CPSC recommends that parents closely monitor their child's use of such seats.
