Laparoscopy: Overview
A laparoscopy is a diagnostic medical procedure used to examine the abdomen. Laparoscopy involves the insertion of an endoscope into a small incision located near the navel. The device fills the abdominal cavity with carbon dioxide, allowing the physician to search for abnormalities.
Laparoscopy is often used to determine the cause of abdominal pain and to perform a variety of other procedures such as biopsy and retrieval of female eggs. Unfortunately, a poorly executed laparoscopy procedure can result in serious injuries including, but not limited to, sepsis and peritonitis.
