Hepatitis Drugs: Overview

Hepatitis is a generic term used to describe any inflammation of the liver. Usually hepatitis is caused by a viral infection. Hepatitis can be acute, lasting less than 6 months, or the condition can be chronic.

Symptoms of acute hepatitis include, but may not be limited to, nausea, vomiting, fever, joint pain, jaundice, and a general feeling of malaise. However, some people may not experience any symptoms, as the virus that causes hepatitis can lie dormant in the body for up to 30 years. Nevertheless, these "silent" carriers of the hepatitis infection may continue to be contagious.

Hepatitis can lead to liver failure and death.
