Jaundice Screening
Sadly, kernicterus, a condition that had been virtually eradicated in the U.S. by the 1970's, is reemerging. Jaundice, the cause of kernicterus, is widely known and supported by volumes of literature. The re-emergence of kernicterus is attributed to early discharge of newborns; the limitations of visual assessment of jaundice; the lack of concern about jaundice among pediatricians, neonatologists, and nurses; and the misinterpretations of practice parameters designed to protect newborns.
Cost-cutting efforts have eliminated many important laboratory tests. Testing to protect against kernicterus typically costs less than $30. If your newborn exhibits signs of jaundice, such as yellowish skin and eyes or dark urine, you should demand that such a test be conducted.
