Thyroid Drugs: Overview
The thyroid gland produces, stores and releases hormones that control some of the body's functions. The gland is located in the neck, just below the Adam's apple.
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too little hormone. People suffering from hypothyroidism exhibit symptoms including, but not limited to, exhaustion, forgetfulness, dry skin, brittle nails, depression and weight gain. Symptoms may vary from person to person. Hypothyroidism may be treated with hormone replacement therapy.
Hyperthyroidism is the opposite of hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. Its symptoms include, but are not limited to, weight loss, nervousness, and irritability. Again, symptoms vary from patient to patient.
Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are five times more likely to occur in women than men.
