Cytoplasmic transfer is an advanced fertility treatment used to aid infertile couples. The procedure involves injecting cytoplasm, the fluid inside a woman's egg, from a donor egg into a patient's egg. By injecting this small amount of cytoplasm into the egg, fertility specialists hope to replace some of the abnormal or missing parts of the patient's egg.
The first human pregnancy aided by cytoplasmic transfer was reported in 1997. Recently, concern has mounted that cytoplasmic transfer may increase the incidence of Turner's Syndrome in a patient's offspring. However, any association between the procedure and Turner's Syndrome has yet to be confirmed.
